From The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 15 Aug 1908, Page 6:
“The Rev. John G. Mattheis has just returned from Innsbruck, where he was ordained early in July, at the completion of his theological course. His father and brother were present at the ordination and accompanied him home. This morning he celebrated his first solemn high mass at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Morgan avenue and Harrison Place, and during the coming week he will be assigned to one of the German churches in the borough.
Father Mattheis was born in Brooklyn about twenty-six years ago. He studied at the college of the Benedictine order at Manchester, N.H., and at St. John’s Seminary in Brooklyn. He succeeded so well in his studies at St. John’s that he was sent to the University of Innsbruck where he has spent the past three years.”
